We actually had pretty good weather for our last match of 2018 and, sadly, our last Westshore Posse Match.
We had no Veterans come out to our Veteran’s Day match, but we did have eight shooters competing.
Our final match drew to a close with
Fightin’ Frank again taking Top shooter and Top 49er for the day. Slowpoke
John took Second Place, and Third Place and
Top Classic Cowboy was claimed by Letort Lawman. Top Duelist, and Fourth
for the day was Smoky Hill Thompson and Fifth Place and Top Cattle Baron
went Tucker.
Other category winners were:
Young Gun: Fire Cracker Frannie
Senior Duelist: Loose Change
The only Clean this month was shot by Fightin’ Frank
Thanks to Letort Lawman, Fightin Frank and Fire Cracker Frannie for coming out early and helping Smoky Hill Thompson and myself set up for this match.
This match marks the last match to be put on by the Westshore Posse. After 25 yrs, we will be closing the barn door for good. We have had a good run, and I hope we have provided entertainment and camaraderie for many along the way.
We have had help from many people through
the quarter century of our existence, from both officers and members who
pitched in and kept things rolling. I would like to express a special
thanks to Smoky Hill Thompson.
Smoky has been a member and our Treasurer since the club was formed (and, I
believe, the ONLY current member who can claim to be a “plank owner” at
Westshore Posse).
In addition, Smoky was again drafted into writing stages for our last few
matches.
I also would like to thank Chuckaroo, without whose help you would not have been seeing these newsletters for the past couple decades.
We had a work day after Thanksgiving at
which we disposed of or moved all of the contents of the upper shed (on the
Gorge) to the lower shed.
We will be disposing of this equipment over the next year (primarily to
clubs who have supported our club in the past) with a goal of having that
shed empty before the end of 2019, at which point it, too,
will be turned over to WSSA.
The Posse itself will stay in existence until all assets are distributed to charitable organizations, as required by our bylaws.
Always your pard,
Doc Hornaday,
Secretary, Westshore Posse
“If an American is to amount to anything he must rely upon himself, and not
upon the State; he must take pride in his own work, instead of sitting idle
to envy the luck of others.
He must face life with resolute courage, win victory if he can, and accept
defeat if he must, without seeking to place on his fellow man a
responsibility which is not theirs.” —Theodore Roosevelt
ANNUAL MEETING
WESTSHORE POSSE
JANUARY 2018 MINUTES Meeting was called to order on January
14, 2018 at 10:13 AM by Hud McCoy. A quorum was present,
represented by members Hud McCoy, Slowpoke John, Smoky Hill
Thompson, Letort Lawman, Chester Young, Tucker and Doc
Hornaday, A motion was made by Letort Lawman that
2017 Meeting minutes be accepted as posted on the website
without a reading. Seconded by Tucker and passed with no
nay votes. Treasury report was given and approved
with a motion by Letort Lawman, seconded by Chester Young,
and passed with no nay votes. We had 7 matches in 2017 with a total
revenue of $1210. Expenses included $1036.55 for liability
insurance, $87 for temporary memberships paid to WSSA, $100
to Perry County Youth, $313 to WSSA ($400 minus the cost of
temporary memberships), and $3.67 for Miscellaneous. This
resulted in a $330.22 loss for the year. Our balance stands
at $7661.01. OLD BUSINESS:
ELECTIONS: Tucker
motioned to re-elect the current slate of officers for
another one year term. Letort Lawman seconded, and the
motion passed with no nay votes. Of special
note, in view of the elimination of the
Registrar/Scorekeeper position, Hud McCoy took this
opportunity to express the club’s appreciation to Chester
Young for his many years of loyal service to Westshore
Posse, registering participants and compiling scores. Thank
you, Chester! The new
officers are: President:
Hud McCoy Vice
President: Slowpoke John Treasurer:
Smoky Hill Thompson Secretary:
Doc Hornaday Territorial
Governor: Hired Gun.
Territorial Governor’s Report There have
been no rule changes this year. NEW
BUSINESS: Hud noted
that he had completed work on new target stands which allow
targets to be hung in a vertical line. We would
like to use a grinder to trim down the rebar on those stands
that are slightly too big for the holes in many of our
targets. Perry County
Family Youth Day will be Apr 27th. There will be
an email sent out for volunteers for this great activity.
Motion was made by Letort Lawman to donate $100 to this
event, and was seconded by Tucker. The motion was passed
with no Nay votes. Motion to adjourn made by Tucker and
seconded by Letort Lawman. Meeting
adjourned at 10:47 A.M. Respectfully
submitted, Doc Hornaday Posse
Secretary
No old business was carried over from last year.
The current officers are agreeable to serving another
year No other members present wished to run for any
offices.
Westshore Posse 1911 Shoot Guidelines
On occasion, we will hold joint 1911 / Single Action Revolver, Cowboy Action
Shoots.
This will be a standard Cowboy Action Shooting match with the added attraction
of being able to shoot a 1911 type pistol in lieu of standard single action
revolvers. Scenarios will not differ no matter which style is shot. Folk's
shooting 1911's will have a separate category for scoring purposes and there
will be two overall match winners.
1911 Pistol Requirements:
* Standard single action 1911 Government model pistol having fixed or conventional adjustable sights, a 4-inch or longer barrel and fire .45-caliber ammunition.
* A minimum of 2 magazines capable of holding 5 rounds.
*Period 1911ish holster capable of securely holding 1911 pistol.
Special instructions for folks using a 1911 pistol:
* While pistol is holstered behind the shooting line, the hammer will be lowered and no magazine will be inserted into the magazine well.
* Prior to each stage, magazines will be loaded at the loading table under the supervision of the loading table officer. Magazines will be loaded with no more than five rounds. A magazine will then be inserted into the pistol and the pistol will be holstered. The pistol will be carried to the firing line in the holster with the hammer down on an empty chamber and then made ready on the firing line during the stage (on the clock).
* When the stage begins (on the clock), the shooter will draw the pistol and cycle the slide when it is time for the first pistol target to be shot. If there is a split pistol stage (pistols not shot back to back), the 1911 shooter, after shooting the first and second set of pistol targets, will eject the magazine, and stage the pistol with the slide locked. Any loaded magazine dropped during a stage is dead and may not be retrieved.
* After shooting the entire stage, the 1911 shooter will show the RO that the pistol is clear, make the pistol safe and holster it. He will then go to the unloading table and clear the rifle and shotgun per standard methods. The 1911 shooter and the unloading table officer will verify that the 1911 pistol is empty, the magazine is removed, the slide is released and the hammer is lowered in a safe manner. If any empty magazines are dropped during a stage, they will be retrieved by somebody other than the 1911 shooter and returned to the 1911 shooter at the unloading table.
* Do not expect all brass that is ejected from the 1911 to be recovered at the end of the stage. This is the nature of the beast.
